Our News
Forthcoming HSE Updates to First Aid at Work Training from October 2009
This course now takes place over a (minimum) recommended three days, instead of the current four days. The rationale for this has come about as a result of a reduction of course content and newer training technology now being available.
Emergency First Aider at Work (EFAW) NEW!
This course has now been added by HSE as a one day course for companies to consider in their first aid provision and will entitle the attendee to gain a HSE accredited certificate to act as an emergency first aider in the workplace.
Appointed Person (AP)
This role continues as before and is unchanged in as far as their main role is to call for an ambulance & look after the first aid equipment, e.g. restocking the first aid box.
Annual Updates
HSE have also made recommendations that employers should provide annual updates to their staff who fulfil first aider at work positions (from both FAW & EFAW) namely in a ½ day format to refresh their skills.
Refresher Courses
Both FAW & EFAW courses will continue to require those staff members to attend a refresher course to maintain their first aider role within the workplace (FAW - two day attendance/EFAW - retaking the whole one day course).
Risk Assessment
The table of risk assessment issued by HSE to advise companies on the number and categories of first aiders required following their own in-house risk review process is currently being updated but can only be a guide. This will not take into account the complexity or unique nature of the risks potentially encountered within the rail industry, though of course the new EFAW role gives further consideration to this.
First Aid At Work (FAW)
The course has been developed to meet the occupational requirements.
F.A.W. Re-qualification
Re-qualification is by attendance on a two day re-qualification course taken before the expiry of the three year competency period.
Emergency Aid For Appointed Persons & Electrical Accidents
This is a four hour module covering all aspects of the Appointed Person role which includes emergency first aid for electrical accidents, specifically designed for industry.
Manual Handling
Over 1.2 million people are affected each year by back problems and minor muscular-skeletal aches and pains. The RIFAA Manual Handling course covers assessing the risks, the principals of safe handling and practice in safe lifting.
Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
The RIFAA AED Course provides qualified First Aiders with the underpinning skills and knowledge to enable them to resuscitate a casualty who has suffered a heart attack
Fire Training
To enable participants to identify the dangers and causes of fire in the rail environment and understand fire prevention, know what actionís are to be taken in the event of fire.
